SAT & ACT Prep for Garden City Students.
Preparation for the digital SAT and the ACT for students at Garden City High School and at Chaminade, Kellenberg, Sacred Heart, and St. Anthony's. Available as one-on-one tutoring or as a structured group class, and the right choice between those two is not obvious.
Score matters more here than the test-optional headlines suggest. Garden City sends a high proportion of students toward direct-entry business and nursing programs, and those programs frequently maintain testing expectations and score-linked scholarships even where the wider university has gone test optional.
Everything begins with a timed diagnostic, because a study plan built without one is guesswork.
Serving Garden City, Mineola, Stewart Manor, Floral Park, New Hyde Park, and Rockville Centre. See all service areas.
Group Class or One-on-One?
Group Classes Work When
A student is starting from a fairly typical baseline, benefits from a fixed weekly commitment they cannot quietly skip, and is reasonably self-directed between sessions. Classes cost less per hour, and the pace of a cohort motivates some students more than a private session does.
One-on-One Works When
A student's score profile is lopsided, they are close to a target and chasing specific remaining points, they have testing accommodations that change pacing strategy, or their schedule cannot accommodate a fixed class time. Also the right call for students well above or well below the class average, since a class necessarily teaches to the middle.
Many Students Use Both
A common and cost-effective pattern is a group class to build the foundation and cover the content broadly, followed by a short block of one-on-one sessions targeting whatever the first official score report exposes.
What Both Include
A full-length timed diagnostic before instruction begins, error analysis by category rather than by score alone, and timed practice between sessions, whichever format you choose.
What We Pay Attention to Here
- 01
Score thresholds for direct-entry business and nursing programs, which are frequently higher than the host university's published range and are sometimes tied to scholarship eligibility rather than admission.
- 02
The PSAT and National Merit pathway. The junior-year administration determines Finalist eligibility, and several universities attach substantial automatic awards to it. Worth knowing before the college list is fixed.
- 03
Trimester scheduling for Chaminade and Kellenberg students, whose comprehensive examination periods do not line up with the public school calendar. Test preparation has to be planned around them, not through them.
- 04
Autumn athletic seasons. A recruited athlete's autumn is not a realistic preparation window, which usually means the summer before junior year carries more weight than it otherwise would.
- 05
Coordination with the rest of the plan. If your student is also working with our college counseling team, the testing calendar is built against the actual college list rather than a generic timeline.
Garden City Testing FAQs
In most cases yes, and for Garden City families specifically the answer leans harder toward yes than the general advice suggests. Direct-entry business and nursing programs often retain testing expectations even where the wider university does not, and many merit scholarship formulas still use scores.
The practical logic is simple: a strong score helps and a weak score can usually be withheld. Get the diagnostic, see the realistic range, then decide. Deciding not to test before you know the range is deciding blind.
Class size and diagnostic specificity, mostly. A school-run session typically covers general strategy for a large group across a limited number of meetings. Our classes run smaller, begin with an individual timed diagnostic, and build on error categories rather than covering the test uniformly.
If your student has already done a school program and is not moving, that is usually a signal that they need targeted one-on-one work rather than a second round of general instruction.
It affects timing rather than content. Comprehensive examination periods at the end of each trimester are intense and are not a realistic window for concurrent test preparation, so we build around them.
For most Chaminade students that pushes the heaviest preparation into the summer before junior year. Note that our Chaminade comprehensive examination preparation is a separate program from SAT work, and some families use both at different points in the year.
Work backward from the middle fifty percent range published by the institutions actually on your student's list, and then look specifically at the range for the program rather than the university where they differ, which is common for business and nursing.
If the list is not built yet, that is the more urgent piece of work and our college counseling team should be your starting point rather than test prep.
Cohorts run through the year, weighted toward the months ahead of each test date. Call us for the current dates. If nothing fits, one-on-one sessions are scheduled around your student rather than the other way around.
Yes. Approved College Board accommodations carry over to the digital exam, and we build preparation around the accommodation the student will actually have, since practicing at standard time and testing at extended time changes the entire pacing approach.
If accommodations have not been applied for, start early. Approval takes time and the application generally runs through the school.
