East Coast Scholars is on Conklin Street, which makes us the tutor Farmingdale families can reach in under ten minutes on a school night. We work with students from Farmingdale High School, Weldon E. Howitt Middle School, Albany Avenue and Northside, and the parochial and private schools along the Route 110 corridor.
Sessions are one-on-one. There is no room full of students sharing an instructor, and no worksheet packet standing in for teaching. A session is sixty minutes with one tutor and one student working on that student's actual coursework.

Subjects Covered, Grades 6 Through 12
Mathematics
Pre-algebra through Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus AB and BC, plus AP Statistics. New York's math sequence is cumulative in a way that punishes gaps, so we tend to work backward until we find the actual break rather than drilling the current unit.
Science
Living Environment, Earth Science, Chemistry, and Physics, including the Regents courses and AP Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Science. Laboratory requirements and Regents lab minutes get factored into the plan when they matter.
English and Writing
Reading comprehension, literary analysis, thesis construction, essay structure, grammar, and vocabulary. We work on the assignment in front of the student rather than on generic writing exercises, because transfer to the actual class is the point.
Social Studies
Global History and Geography, United States History and Government, Economics, and Participation in Government, plus AP United States History, AP World History, AP Government, and AP Economics. Document-based question technique is its own skill and we teach it explicitly.
Study Skills and Organization
For students whose problem is not the content. Note-taking systems, assignment tracking, breaking long-term projects into stages, and preparing for a test more than one night before it. This is frequently the highest-leverage work we do.
World Languages and Electives
Spanish, French, and Italian through the Regents and AP levels, plus computer science and business electives. If a subject is not listed, ask. Our instructor network is broad and we would rather refer you elsewhere than take a subject we cannot cover well.

Usually within one marking period for a content gap, and longer for an execution problem. If a student is missing a specific prerequisite skill, filling it produces visible movement fairly quickly because the material stops being incomprehensible.
If the issue is organization, missed assignments, or test preparation habits, expect a slower curve. Those are behaviour changes and behaviour changes take a semester, not a month. We will tell you at the outset which one we think we are dealing with.
One session a week handles maintenance and moderate support and covers the majority of our students. Two a week is appropriate when a student is genuinely behind and trying to catch up while the class keeps moving.
More than two is rarely useful and often counterproductive, because students need time to work independently between sessions. Tutoring that replaces independent work rather than supporting it builds dependence, which is the opposite of the goal.
We use homework as the working material, which is different from doing it. A session built around tonight's problem set is productive because the problems are real, they are current, and the student is motivated to understand them.
What we will not do is produce answers so an assignment can be submitted. That helps a grade this week and hurts the student in June.
Give us reasonable notice and we reschedule without charge. Last-minute cancellations are handled case by case, and we are not unreasonable about illness or a genuine emergency. Full scheduling terms are covered when you enroll.
Yes, and it is a legitimate use of the service. A student holding a solid grade in a hard course who wants a stronger one is a narrower engagement than a rescue, and usually a shorter one. It is also a common starting point for families who later move into college counseling.
Grades six through twelve for subject tutoring, which covers middle school through the end of high school including honors and AP coursework. If you have a student outside that range, call and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right fit.
