Most Manhasset families arrive having already decided they are preparing for the SAT, usually because that is what everyone else is doing. For a meaningful minority of students, the ACT is the better test and switching produces a larger gain than months of additional SAT work would have.
So we start with the comparison, not the curriculum. A short diagnostic on each exam tells us more in one weekend than a semester of assumption.
After that the work is conventional and unglamorous: timed practice, error analysis, and pacing, one-on-one at our Farmingdale office or live over Zoom.

SAT or ACT?
Universities accept both and none prefer one over the other. The only question that matters is which one your student scores better on relative to the scale.

Both exams have changed recently. The SAT is now digital and adaptive, and the ACT has been restructured, including making its science section optional. Advice from even a few years ago is unreliable on both.
Building a Testing Plan Around a Manhasset Schedule
A plan that ignores the student's actual year does not survive contact with it. AP examinations in May, a heavy autumn athletic season, and the winter assessment period all compete for the same hours.

The productive window
The single best block of preparation time in the whole calendar. No coursework competing for attention. Structured group classes or intensive one-on-one both work here.
First official sitting
Sitting the real exam in the autumn of junior year leaves room to improve, which matters because scores commonly rise on a second attempt.
Targeted work on the gap
Between sittings, work narrows to the specific areas the official score report identifies rather than broad review.
Second sitting, then stop
A second attempt, superscored where the institution allows it. After this, attention should move to coursework, AP examinations, and the application.
Superscoring Changes How You Should Test
Many universities superscore, meaning they combine a student's best section results across multiple sittings. Where that applies, a student can reasonably concentrate on one section for one attempt and the other for the next rather than trying to peak everywhere at once.
Not every institution does this, and the policies differ in detail. Some superscore the SAT but not the ACT. Some consider only the highest single sitting. Building a testing strategy without checking the policies at the schools actually on the list is a common and avoidable mistake.
This is one of several places where test preparation and college counseling genuinely need to talk to each other, which is easier when they are not two separate companies.
What Families Ask
Take a timed diagnostic of each and compare the results using a concordance table, since the two scales are not directly comparable. If one is clearly stronger, prepare for that one and stop thinking about the other.
If they come out roughly equivalent, which happens often, default to the SAT for most Long Island students simply because the local familiarity and available practice material are deeper. The decision should take one weekend, not one semester.
Two is the norm and is usually sufficient. Three is defensible when there is a specific reason, such as illness on a test day or a clearly identified and now-addressed weakness.
Beyond three, the returns are small and the cost is high in time, money, and morale. A fourth attempt is very rarely the best use of a senior autumn.
Usually that the exam is testing something school does not: speed under time pressure, and question-type recognition. Neither is measured by a classroom assessment where a student has as long as they need.
It is generally good news, because pacing and recognition respond well to structured practice. It is a very different problem from a student who does not know the underlying mathematics, and it resolves faster.
It matters in two ways. It is a low-stakes rehearsal for the format, which has real value, and the junior-year administration determines National Merit eligibility.
National Merit is worth understanding early because a number of universities attach substantial automatic awards to Finalist status, and some of them are not on a typical Manhasset list. It can be worth a conversation before the list is set.
Yes, and it is arguably better suited to online delivery than subject tutoring is. The exam itself is now taken on a screen, practice material is digital, and reviewing a timed section over a shared screen works well.
