East Coast Scholars is the college counselor Jericho families rely on to help students stand out at one of New York’s most competitive high schools and gain acceptance to their top-choice universities.

Jericho College Counseling

A Small District Where Everyone Knows Everyone's List.

Jericho graduates a small class. That single fact shapes college admissions here more than the district's rankings do. When the graduating cohort is measured in the low hundreds rather than the high hundreds, the internal competition is visible, personal, and impossible to ignore.

Families tell us the same thing repeatedly: everyone knows where everyone is applying, the list circulates before it is finalized, and students start making strategic decisions based on what their friends are doing rather than what fits them. That is a specific problem and it needs a specific answer.

As the college counselor Jericho families bring in from outside that circle, our value is partly expertise and partly distance. We are not in the group chat.

The Work

What We Handle for Jericho Students

Breaking the Herd Pattern

In a small cohort, lists converge. Twelve students end up applying to the same eight universities because that is what the strong students did last year. We pull the list apart and rebuild it around this student, which often surfaces excellent institutions nobody in the grade is looking at.

Early Decision With Real Analysis

In a district this size, several classmates may target the same binding early school. We work through whether ED genuinely improves this student's odds at this institution, or whether it only forecloses options. Sometimes the answer is to go early somewhere else entirely.

Course Rigor Inside a Demanding Curriculum

Jericho offers a deep advanced course catalog and students routinely take on more than is wise. We help decide which advanced courses actually strengthen the application and which are just a fifth AP that will cost sleep and produce a B.

Activity Depth Over Activity Count

The activity list in a high-achieving small district tends toward the same clubs and the same leadership titles. Admissions readers notice sameness quickly. We push toward genuine depth in fewer places, which reads better and is also a healthier way to spend high school.

Recommendation Strategy

With a small faculty, the same teachers write many letters for the same universities each year. Which teachers your student asks, when they ask, and what context they provide all matter more here than in a large school.

Financial Aid and Merit Even When Aid Is Not Expected

Families in Jericho often assume they will not qualify for anything and skip the process. That is frequently wrong, and merit awards in particular are not need-based. We run the numbers before the list is locked. Full service detail is on our college advising page.

The Uncomfortable Part

Excellent Grades Are the Entry Fee, Not the Advantage

This is the conversation Jericho parents find hardest, so we will put it plainly. At the universities most Jericho students target, a near-perfect transcript does not distinguish an applicant. It qualifies them to be considered. Everyone in the pile has one.

What separates an acceptance from a deferral at that point is the part of the application that cannot be measured: whether the reader finishes it with a clear sense of who this person is and why they belong on that campus. That is produced by essays, by activity framing, and by strategic coherence across the whole file.

It is also the part of the process that a stretched school counseling department, however good, cannot deliver at the level of individual attention it requires. We are not a replacement for your school counselor. We do the part they do not have the hours for.

Jericho Questions

The Questions Jericho Parents Actually Ask

It can be, in two ways. First, it distorts the student's own thinking. Lists get built by social proof rather than fit, and students end up applying to universities they have no real interest in because it is what strong students do here.

Second, it concentrates the comparison. When several classmates apply to one university, they are read against each other. Neither problem is fatal, but both are worth naming out loud, and the fix starts with rebuilding the list from the student outward.

It should not, and in our experience it does not. We are explicit that we work alongside the school counselor rather than around them. They control the school report, the profile document, and the counselor letter, all of which matter, and we have no interest in complicating that relationship.

What we do is the volume of individual work a school counseling office cannot do at scale: repeated essay rounds, list iteration, and the strategic conversations that take hours per student.

It can change it considerably, because a number of universities attach substantial automatic merit awards to National Merit Finalist status. Some of those institutions are not on a typical Jericho list, and families frequently do not know the awards exist.

Whether it is worth reshaping a list around that depends entirely on the family's finances and the student's goals. It is a conversation worth having early rather than in March of senior year.

We do not discuss any student's list, outcomes, or engagement with any other family, and we do not use student names or outcomes in marketing without explicit permission. In a district where information travels quickly, that discretion is part of what families are paying for.

It also means we will not tell you what a classmate is doing, even if you ask.

Usually no. There is a point at which additional rigor stops improving the application and starts damaging the grades, the activities, and the student. Admissions readers evaluate rigor in context, and a strong record in five demanding courses reads better than a strained record in six.

If the concern is subject mastery rather than course count, targeted academic tutoring or AP exam preparation is a better lever than adding another class.

Subject tutoring and SAT and ACT preparation, both available in person at our Farmingdale office or online. The overview of everything available locally is on the Jericho services page. We will quote rates for whichever service fits at your free consultation.
